Louis Bardales (b. 1987, Chicago, Illinois) is a Guatemalan American artist and bilingual poet whose work moves fluidly between visual art and language. Raised by parents from Guatemala and El Salvador, his practice is shaped by a layered cultural inheritance that informs both his imagery and his linguistic sensibility. Bardales studied poetry at Columbia College Chicago, where he developed an approach to language rooted in experimentation, fragmentation, and intuitive structure. This poetic foundation continues to inform his visual work, which often operates like a parallel language—built from line, color, and shifting symbolic forms. Working across painting, drawing, and paper-based media, Bardales creates compositions that oscillate between cartoon-like surrealism and vivid abstraction. His imagery is at once playful and psychologically charged, constructing what might be understood as personal mythologies—forms that feel both invented and deeply internal. Line functions as a primary agent in his work, shaping unstable forms and spatial relationships that resist fixed interpretation.
