I have been making threaded artwork since high school. I began with wood and nails and focused on two dimensional symmetrical geometric shapes. They were interesting and colorful, and I sold them at a few street fairs in Milwaukee in the early 70’s. When I started working with clay, I first focused on making functional pieces on the wheel and using coil building techniques. I then moved on to building with slabs and I realized I could build 3 dimensional sculptures that would support complex threaded designs. This allowed me to move from the limitation of 2-dimensional threaded work to complex three dimensional pieces. I am constantly amazed at the patterns that arise as I take the threads off the flat surface of a simple slab and let the threading climb onto, into and around the 3-dimensional ceramic sculptures I build. Please take the time to look at these pieces from several different angles. You will see circles, angles, curves, and parabolas. It is these shapes that I think about as I build each sculpture.
