Acrylic paint, cardboard, tissue paper, painter's tape, and magic marker on canvas. I began experimenting with art about eight years ago, and this was one of the first large pieces I ever created. It began with a drawing of an angler fish in magic marker on a piece of paper. I loved the drawing but wanted to take it further. I didn’t know much about art then (I still don’t), so I just messed around with whatever materials I felt like. The letters are made out of cardboard and painted with acrylic paint. The 3D border around the fish is made of tissue paper and painter’s tape. The background of the canvas is decorated with acrylic paint and tissue paper confetti, collected from various OK Go concerts over the years. Anyone who’s seen Finding Nemo probably knows that the angler fish is a predatory, carnivorous deep-sea fish that uses a bioluminescent lure to attract prey. A lesser-known fact, however, is that the only predatory anglers are female. Male anglers are much smaller and have no lure or sharp teeth. They attach themselves to the female angler as a parasite and fuse with her body. Eventually, they lose their own eyes and mouths.
