As a kid, a fancy new mall opened up near my grandparents' home. Whenever we visited them, especially during the sweltering hot summers...we always liked shopping at this particular mall location with its movie theaters and sticky Orange Julius counter and aromatic food courts. Then many years later (deep into my adulthood), the New York Times ran an article on the death of the shopping mall, a mainstay presence of middle-class Americana...brought into vivid realism with a huge photo of this particular mall...my mall, once stately on the northern edge of Kansas City and now tragically dilapidated, resting in ruins, sad, abandoned, forgotten. I imaged the crumbled, broken cinema marquee in a heap with mannequin body parts in the weed-seized parking lot.
