Daphne

The Greek nymph, Daphne, was pursued by the god Apollo. His advances were unwelcome—he chased her as she fled. Just as he was about to catch her, Daphne called to the gods for help, and she was transformed into a laurel tree. The laurel tree was thereafter the favorite tree of Apollo. Although the most well-known, the story of Daphne is not unique. There are many ancient Greek stories of nymphs being transformed into nature to escape the unwanted pursuit of a god. The nymphs are nature deities –personifications of nature – who choose to transform from womanhood back into their true natural forms in order to escape the unwanted attention of the gods.
